Weyburn's 56th Annual Clean Up Campaign is underway, which is a residential campaign between five areas of the city. Deadlines are fast-approaching, making this the week for residents to clean up their yards and also contribute to cleaning up their neighbourhoods.
The Weyburn Clean-up Committee will be announcing this year's winners of the Residential Clean-Up Judging on June 1. This gives residents a few more days to get their yards ready to make their refuse-collection area a winner. The area judged to have improved the most from last year will be chosen as the winning area and five residents in that area will be randomly chosen to receive prizes.
The landfill coupons, which entitle holders to one free dump of household and yard waste, was distributed to all homes in Weyburn in April. The coupons expire May 31, so residents are encouraged to take that long-needed trip to the dump this week. Approximately 3,500 homes receive the coupon, but usually no more than 800 are redeemed. So far, less than 200 have been used. The coupon has a $7 value, which can be especially helpful for those who have more than one truckload be taken to the landfill.
The Weyburn Minor Ball Association conducted a Green Day city-wide clean-up on May 22 and 23. The City donated the garbage bags and $300 to the organization to provide treats for the children who participate in the cleanup.
Schools are reminded that the 2012 poster contest deadline for submission is also June 1. Students in grades 1 through 6 are encouraged to create posters along the theme, "Idle-Free School Zones."
The winning posters receive $30 for first place, and $20 for second place, with three age categories: Grades 1 to 2, Grades 3 to 4 and Grades 5 to 6. The winners will receive their prizes at a City Council meeting. The winning posters will be displayed at weyburn.ca and at various businesses around the city.
The Weyburn Chamber of Commerce also presents awards to businesses who maintain a physical presence representing the cleanliness and professionalism that defines our community. The Chamber presents in two categories: Industrial & Agricultural and Commercial Services. The 2011 winners for Industrial & Agricultural was Central Well / Tartan Controls and the winner for Commercial Services was Smitty's Restaurant. The Chamber judging crew will be touring on May 31.
Hazardous Waste Day is set for June 2 from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., during which residents can drop off to the Public Works their used flourescent lights, batteries, chemicals and other items too hazardous for the landfill. Residents can also take unwanted or used paint cans and electronics to SARCAN that day, however the facility will not be conducting bottle returns during that time.
