Weyburn Firefighters filled their boots to the tune of $4,012 during their boot blitz for Muscular Dystrophy in three locations around the city Saturday, September 21.

Each year, local firefighters turn to their community to help them fill the boot to support persons living with neuromuscular disorders.

This annual fire fighter campaign has helped the Weyburn Fire Department raise over $33, 259 since 1974.

In addition to hitting the streets, Fill the Boots donation stations will be around the city of Weyburn the entire month of September at local businesses.

"Just recently in northern Saskatchewan, Prince Albert Fire Fighters raised over $9,600 in their community and our department is looking to match this amount in Weyburn," said Weyburn Fire Chief Steve Debienne.

Firefighters have been supporters of Muscular Dystrophy Canada since its inception in 1954.

Fill the Boots were introduced as another way for firefighters to challenge their community to raise awareness and funds for Muscular Dystrophy Canada. Fill the Boots are hosted in cities and towns all across Canada.

"We are very grateful for such community support and this year we are hoping for the same," said Debienne.

Muscular Dystrophy is the name given to a group of over 150 types of neuromuscular disorders characterized by the wasting away and progressive weakness of the voluntary muscles that control voluntary movement. Over time, people with neuromuscular disorders may lose the ability to walk, speak, and ultimately breathe. For some individuals, the disorder is fatal. There is currently no cure.
