The business community in both the City and RM of Weyburn continue to grow and thrive in a healthy economy, with the growth reflected both in business licenses issued by the City, and the issuance of building permits.
Licenses issued to new businesses doubled in the year-to-date from last year, going from 73 licenses to 140 this year, while home-based businesses was slightly less this year at five from seven issued last year.
"The expansion of our business community at this rate obviously shows positive signs for the economic progression of Weyburn. Home businesses have slowed slightly compared to 2013, but considering the increase in business licenses overall, it seems more prospective business owners are setting up commercial establishments for their businesses rather than running them from home," said Drew Bakken, a planner with the Planning and Development department for the City of Weyburn.
In the commercial category, there have been 10 permits issued to the end of September worth a total of $2,577,000, while last year for the same time period there were 11 permits worth $9,035,000.
The main difference in construction value from last year to the current year was due to two buildings, worth $2.27 million and $4.6 million respectively, were built in January and February of 2013 respectively. Otherwise, said Bakken, "the number of commercial permits and the value of commercial developments are quite similar."
For construction in the industrial category, there have been five permits issued this year worth $2,812,000, compared to seven permits issued last year worth $2,266,000.
On the residential side, the numbers seem to indicate that multi-family building development has slowed down slightly, with 19 less dwelling units created than last year, but single family dwellings have increased, with 25 new dwelling units created compared to 18 last year in this same time period.
The single family dwellings are worth a total of $8,739,000, while for multi-family dwellings, eight large buildings had permits issued with a total of 60 dwelling units, worth $9,666,000.
Compared to last year, there were 18 single family dwellings worth $6,933,712, and seven permits for multi-family dwellings, with 79 dwellings created, worth a total of $11,032,000.
There have been numerous single-family homes in Riverwood, along with The Creeks on the city's east side.
