Keena Tessier and Kennedy Strickland of Yellow Grass School recently took part in a competition at the Canada-Wide Science Fair in Montreal.
As part of a joint career-science venture, teachers Michael Graham and Megan Hillstead challenged the Grade 8/9 class to design a toy which could be entered into a national competition, a toy development contest sponsored by SpinMaster Toys.
The girls designed a “Heal Me Baby” toy, which was chosen as one of five concepts from across the Canada to be part of the competition, and the only entry chosen from Saskatchewan. The other contest finalists were from Alberta and Nova Scotia. Teacher Derek Brillinger accompanied the girls to the Science Fair.
Staff members of Yellow Grass School who were recently recognized for their years of service were Kristy Sambrook, for five years of teaching, Tricia Klemenz for 15 years of teaching, and Carrie Moore for 20 years of service as the school custodian.
A Pokemon trading card and game night was held at the Yellow Grass library on May 30 in the upper level, with 10 people in attendance. The door prize was won by Harmony DeRoose. Snacks were served. The entire event was organized and led by the Baumung family.
The annual Summer Solstice event will be held in Yellow Grass on Saturday, June 18. The day will start off with a breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. in the Drop In Centre. At 10 a.m. a presentation from SGI will be held in front of the library on bike safety. Proper bike helmet fitting will follow, and a bike roadeo will be held, for which bike helmets are mandatory.
Draws will be made and the grand prize will be a new bike. A Big Balls soccer game will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with teams needing to be entered. A barbecue lunch will be held in Allen Park, and a trade show will be held from 11-3, with a petting zoo to be held from 1-3 p.m.
More details will follow in regards to a photo scavenger hunt. Supper will be held from 5-7 p.m. in the park, and a street dance will be held following supper, with music supplied by The Yahoos. A fireworks show will take place at 10:30 p.m.
Rain fell in Yellow Grass on May 30 and most of May 31, along with a quick thundershower on June 2. Some recorded three inches of rain over the week.
Music students of Gail Murray held their recital on May 29 at the Calvary Baptist Church in Weyburn.
Winners of cribbage at the Drop In Centre on May 20 were Cam Griffin in first, Sophie Skulmoski in second and Shirley Bartlett in third. The winners on May 27 were Otto Dreger in first, Ruth Boren in second and Sophie Skulmoski in third.
