For a second year in a row, the Family Place Festival of Trees fundraiser brought in $60,000. "It was outstanding," said executive director Dawn Gutzke. "We did match last year, which was over-the-top record breaking.

Operation Christmas Child was again a success in Weyburn, collecting 1,733 boxes to be sent on to Calgary. The numbers this year were slightly lower than the 2012 total of 1,800 boxes.

Police responded to two break and enters in the city on December 1. A residence on 13th Street was entered by forcing the front door and numerous articles were stolen, including a laptop, jewelry and coins.

In 1991 the Parliament of Canada declared December 6 as the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women in Canada. This day marks the 24th anniversary of the massacre of 14 young women at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal.
