Assiniboia recreation transitions from summer to fall activity

Southland Co-op Centre will kick off arena season with a big weekend Sept 5-7 that includes training camp, WHL game and a Banjo Bowl tailgate party.

ASSINIBOIA — How fast time flies when you’re having fun. Assiniboia recreation had plenty to offer this summer and, while Mother Nature did not always provide the best weather, opportunities were there.

Soon the transition to fall and winter recreation programs will begin.

The Southland Co-op Centre will kick off rink season on the Sept. 5 weekend with Richardson Pioneer Southern Jr. B Rebels camp, a WHL exhibition game and a Banjo Bowl tailgate party. Regular rink season will follow, including a 3-on-3 hockey league that runs from Sept. 1 to Oct. 2.

The Richardson Pioneer Southern Jr. B Rebels will play two exhibition games, including one at home on Sept. 14. Their season home opener will be held Sept. 27.

Evolved hockey camp will start the weekend of Sept. 12 and run the final three weekends of September.

The Assiniboia Curling Club is preparing to host the Canadian Mixed Curling Championship in November while also celebrating its 90th anniversary. Residents are encouraged to check with their local curling club to learn how they can help with these events, get tickets, or support the organizers.

Better Together barbecues were highly successful this season, drawing record numbers throughout the summer. The event has now concluded for 2025, but community support will continue to help fund recreation programming.

The swimming pool hosted a pool party on Aug. 21 and is winding down its season, with Aug. 29 marking the final day of operation this summer.

Golf will be available as long as the weather holds, with the season projected to close on Thanksgiving weekend. The golf club’s website and social media pages will provide the latest updates.

Residents are encouraged to check the events calendar on the Town of Assiniboia website or the Southland Co-op Centre’s website and Facebook page for details on upcoming fall programming.
