“Gas prices jumped across Canada over the last week, with average prices rising in every province,” said Patrick De Haan, head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy. “The increases were fueled not only by oil briefly hitting the $70 per barrel mark, but also by a weakening Canadian dollar— pressured by growing concerns over U.S.-Canada trade tensions. Since oil is traded in U.S. dollars, a weaker loonie makes it more expensive for Canadian refiners, ultimately pushing pump prices higher. With OPEC+ now set to raise production again in September, fully restoring output to 2023 levels, and economic uncertainty still in play, oil prices could face renewed headwinds. If Canada can reach a trade deal that strengthens the dollar, it may bring some relief to motorists later this summer.”
