Living in a rural corner of Canada doesn’t mean you have to put up with slow and antiquated Internet connection speeds.

Thanks to Xplornet Communications Inc., remote communities, like those they serve in Saskatchewan, can enjoy a host of high-speed online services just like those in the big cities do—from streamed movies and remote learning, to business applications and real-time face-to-face communications that keep you feeling connected.

“That’s our mission, which has become particularly relevant given the backdrop of a global pandemic that has forced so many to stay close to home, making access online more important than ever, whether it’s for remote learning or small businesses who deem this as a critical service,” says James Maunder, a Saskatchewan native who is Xplornet’s Vice President of Communications and Public Affairs.

Xplornet was established 15 years ago, and in that time has delivered high-speed Internet services to places in rural Canada where few of the larger providers feared to tread due to the costs involved.

“We believe rural Canadians deserve equal access to all of the new applications coming for the Internet, including 5G services,” Maunder says.

While delivering 5G applications to remote customers is a goal for the near future, , Maunder says Xplornet has been busy linking communities with fast, 50 Mbps (megabits per second) connections, with unlimited data

“That has recently been a dramatic improvement for a lot of communities in rural Saskatchewan,” Maundersays.

As an example of what it means, Maunder explains a service of five Mbps is typically required to stream a movie on a single device from a service such as Netflix.

“If you have multiple devices in the home, as many customers do, that ability to stream simultaneously needs those much faster download speeds, which we can deliver.”

But it’s not just speed and convenience Xplornet provides. It delivers a feeling of connection for all of its users to the world around them.

“That’s important now, more than ever,” Maunder says. “And the reality for the time being, and possibly for the near future is many people will be working and learning from home.

“More and more small businesses will also be run from home. And we’re proud to be a part of that transition, because our mission is to seamlessly connect you to what matters, whether it’s school, work or play.”
