Greetings from cloudy NYC. There's lots of big AI news today, but one is more interesting than the rest.

Built on his previous executive order (EO), President Biden has signed a new EO with comprehensive AI guidelines for the federal government's deployment of AI. Under the new directives, federal agencies are mandated to ensure their AI systems do not compromise American citizens' rights and safety.

Agencies have a December 1 deadline to implement "concrete safeguards" against the risks posed by AI, including algorithmic bias. This policy delineates boundaries for AI applications, particularly in areas affecting election integrity, critical infrastructure, and the operational use of robots in various public settings.

The guidelines also emphasize the need for transparency in government's use of AI. Agencies are required to annually disclose a list of their AI systems, alongside assessments of associated risks and management strategies.

To oversee the newly mandated AI governance measures, federal departments are tasked with appointing chief AI officers, supplemented by AI governance boards due by May 27.

To me, it seems like most of these guidelines are looking at the future through the lens of the past. Read the White House Fact Sheet about the new EO and let me know what you think. You can reply to this email. -s
