BARON, Katie

At the age of 97 years, Katie Baron, beloved wife of the late William Baron, passed away peacefully at the Canora Hospital on August 30, 2015. Katie was born on the family homestead, east of Canora Beach Road, in the Canora District, SK on November 1, 1917 to Michael and Francis (Kowalchuk) Babchishin. She married “her Bill” on October 9, 1937, in Canora, SK. They purchased a farm near Amsterdam where they raised their two children, Russell and Zonnia. Together,

they farmed until they retired to Canora in 1976. Katie worked alongside her husband and took great pride in her large prolific garden and her abundance of pristine flowers, both on the farm and in town. She enjoyed cooking, baking, and entertaining company. Throughout her life, she did a lot of sewing, knitting, crocheting and embroidery. To compliment many country drives, she packed picnic baskets, which were greatly enjoyed by family and friends at Crystal Lake, Good Spirit Lake and Greenwater Park.

Katie’s faith was very important to her. She valued praying the Rosary and was a dedicated member of the UCWL for thirtynine years. She attended Mass as often as she could as her health declined. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. Katie was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Francis Babchishin; husband, William Baron; son, Russell Baron; soninlaw, Wes Gore; sisters: Lena Babchishin, Mary Bodnarchuk, Angella Zayshley, and Margaret Kuzik; and her brothers: Tom, John, Bill, Joe, Nick, and Victor. She is survived by her daughter, Zonnia Gore; daughterinlaw, Verna Baron; granddaughters: Cheryl (Karren) Statchuk and their sons: Orry, Traven, and Kole and Marcy (Maynard) Ostafichuk, and their daughters: Amy, Arianna, and Trinity; grandsons: Darrell (Mary) Baron and their son, Darrell R. (Tracy), Kevin (Sandra) Baron and their sons: Tate and Alden, Brett Gore, and  Brad (Shalon) Gore and their daughter, Tori; and her brothers: Paul, Pete, and Wally Babchishin; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and extended family members.

The Prayer Service was held on Wednesday, September 2, 2015, at 7:00 p.m. from the Chapel of Leson’s Funeral Home.
