Supers bats fail to back pitching gem by Kody Rock

Rock pitched a no-hitter and struck out 17, but the Supers offence was nowhere to be found and the game ended in a 0-0 tie.

CANORA - The Canora Supers opened the Southeast Senior Baseball League schedule on May 23 at home against the visiting Saltcoats Lakers, after the Supers had their first two scheduled games rained out; May 15 in Melville against the Parkland Pirates, and May 20 in Saltcoats versus the Lakers. Fortunately on May 23, the home opener took place.

“The fans, pitching, and defence showed up, but the bats were dead silent as the game ended in a 0-0 tie,” said Greg Andreychuk, Supers player/manager.

Kody Rock got the opening day start for the sixth season in a row, and was in mid-season form with an opening day no-hitter. Over the first three innings he struck out nine out of 10 Lakers batters and finished with 17 K’s in total, issued no walks and gave up no hits in another dominant performance.

“Unfortunately for the Supers, the Lakers starting pitcher Matthew Spilchuk was just as effective, allowing no runs on four hits with 12 strikeouts,” said Andreychuk.

Dylan Toffan was the most effective hitter for the Supers with a pair of doubles, while Chaz Jaeb had a double and Braden Kitchen chipped in with a single. The Supers struggled to hit in the clutch. Twice they had runners on second and third with nobody out, and failed to push a run across the plate.

Making their Supers debuts on this night were Jaeb, Kitchen, and Lucas Latham.

Next action for the Supers will be Friday, May 30 in Yorkton vs the Yorkton Tigers. The following afternoon will be a treat for Canora baseball fans, with a rare double header as the Grandview Lakers make the trip from Manitoba to provide the opposition. The first pitch of Game 1 is scheduled for Noon.
