Grade Six students at Outlook High School took the time on Wednesday, March 17 to celebrate what’s known as Elderbeary Day.
Elderbeary Day honours and celebrates the contributions of our elders, those who do so much to pass their teachings, learnings and to raise the younger generations. Though this year’s Elderbeary Day officially took place on March 20, the Grade 602 class of OHS got together to celebrate it three days earlier.
In order to officially ring in the day, the students got together with their teacher Karla Duchesne in the later morning hours to march down the road and greet residents at the Luther Place senior residence with a morning parade. Armed with greeting signs and positive attitudes, the kids put warm smiles on the faces of residents with such a gesture.
Prior to this, the young students enjoyed some knowledge being spread by Elder Judy Pelly, who shared her experiences with the kids via Zoom call on March 16. Pelly, a cultural advisor for the Saskatchewan Health Authority’s Mental Health and Addictions Services Adult Outreach, is Anishinaabe-Saulteaux and was born and raised in Cote First Nation, Treaty Four Territory. She is the ‘Kohkum’ to all and she shares her teachings of her culture and traditions to foster understanding, awareness and acceptance among cultures.
