Saskatchewan artist featured guest at Preeceville Art Group display

The Preeceville Art Group hosted an event on July 6 during Old Home Week to display the talent of local artists. The group also welcomed Norman Yakel, who is originally from Preeceville, as a guest presenter.

The group also welcomed Norman Yakel, who is originally from Preeceville, as a guest presenter. He has been painting for years and has exhibited his artwork across Saskatchewan.

Local artists included: Maureen Johnson, Laureen Johnson, Judy Bjornstad, Vicky Peet, Shelley Minato and Leona Pollock.

Norman Yakel was born in Preeceville in 1944. He stud-ied for one year at the University of Saskatchewan before transferring to the University of Regina where he earned his bachelor of arts degree in 1973. He went on to Stanford University in California where he earned his master of arts degree in 1975. His studies continued and he received his PhD in art from Ohio State in 1979.

His paintings have been exhibited in shows held across Canada and the United States since 1971. A collection of his artwork is in the Saskatchewan Arts Board collection. Since 1978, Yakel has been teaching art at the University of Regina.
