Fans of dinosaurs and creatures that roamed the earth millions of years ago may want to check out what’s coming to the Gardiner Dam Visitor Centre late next week.
The centre will be rolling out the proverbial red carpet and welcoming ‘Big Bert’ for the season, who it turns out will be quite a sizable guest.
That’s because Big Bert is the world’s most complete Terminonaris robusta crocodile skeleton, and he was discovered here in Saskatchewan. The marine predator lived approximately 92 million years ago when the province was under a great inland sea. In 1991, palaeontologist Tim Tokaryk first discovered part of the skeleton along the banks of the Carrot River, and a year later, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum and representatives from the Canadian Museum of Nature collected the rest of the fossil.
Crocodiles such as Bert grew to be 19 feet long, with its skull alone being longer than one meter.
The skeleton is set to arrive at the Gardiner Dam Visitor Centre on June 7.
