Hot tar ignites Old Dutch potato chips

A somewhat odd occurrence last week turned a shipment of Old Dutch chips a little crispier than usual.

A somewhat odd occurrence last week turned a shipment of Old Dutch chips a little crispier than usual.

On June 9, as the company's warehouse on Industrial Avenue was getting a new roof, hot roofing tar dripped through a hole in the roof and ignited some crates of product.

Fortunately, the fire department was able contain the blaze before it caused heat stress to the building. Trevor Morrissey, fire chief, explained that with steel buildings, fire is almost always an all or nothing prospect. If the structure is affected, the whole building is usually a write-off.

In this case, the building was fine, he said. In fact, the roofers were back the next day and finished the job.

Old Dutch did lose a "substantial" amount of product, however, Morrisey said.
