Parkland College is joining forces with two other educational institutions to enhance opportunities for students to prepare for careers in mining.
The college signed agreements July 24 with Carlton Trail College and International Minerals Innovation Institute to provide an introduction to mining course and develop an aboriginal workforce in conjunction with potash operations in the colleges' respective regions.
IMII funding will also allow Parkland to offer SIAST's Electrician Applied Certificate Enhanced program at the school's industrial campus at Esterhazy.
"We serve the community and deliver in-demand programs to produce the skilled graduates that business and industry need," said Parkland College President Dr. Fay Myers. "We are eager to begin these partnerships so we can contribute to the growth and prosperity of the Parkland region."
IMII put up $822,000 to fund the programs.
"IMII is an industry-government-post-secondary education partnership providing leadership to inform, facilitate, coordinate, and financially support industry-driven skills and research capacity that will enhance the growth and global competitiveness of Saskatchewan's minerals industry through collaboration," said Engin Özberk, IMII executive director and senior technical advisor.
