A Grade 12 Yorkton Regional High School student placed third in a provincial physics contest bringing the school's medal count to 12 over the last 11 years.
Rachael Machnee competed April 8 against students from across the province in the Canadian Association of Physicists High School Prize Examination winning bronze and $100.
Physics teacher Wayne Clark said the accomplishment was particularly noteworthy because Machnee was very busy preparing for her Advanced Placement calculus final.
"I wasn't too sure how well I would do, but I wasn't expecting to do as well as I did," she said.
"It's pretty crazy to think maybe I do know something about physics."
She will need to know a lot about physics as she enters Carleton University in Ottawa in September as an Aerospace Engineering student. She will put the $100 prize toward that education, she said.
The winners were Li-ping Mao of Saskatoon and Loc Ho of Prince Albert, who took home $250 and $150 respectively.
Machnee's time at YRHS also includes a national title in Skills Canada robotics. She and three other team members won nationals in 2012.
Yorkton was also well represented at the University of Saskatchewan High School Physics Competition May 14.
Michael Kozushka received honourable mention for excellent performance on the examination.
Incidentally, Kozushka was also a member of a national winning robotics team, which took gold at the 2013 Skills Canada competition.
