A 40-year-old Yorkton man accused of uttering threats to harm RCMP officers and blow up the local detachment will undergo psychiatric testing following a court appearance in Yorkton January 19.

Shayne Trowbridge appeared before a judge Monday via video from Regina Correctional Centre where he has been remanded in custody since Friday last.

On January 14, a member of the public alerted police threats to blow up the RCMP detachment had appeared on Facebook.

Investigators quickly identified Trowbridge as the suspect and determined the detachment was safe. City Hall, where the municipal detachment is located, was never even evacuated. They also conducted a search of the rural detachment and found no explosives.

Worried, however, that residents of the multi-unit residence where Trowbridge lived might be in danger, police evacuated six adults and one child to the Gallagher Centre. They spent one night at an undisclosed location awaiting the arrival of the RCMP explosive device unit to clear the apartment building.

According to the Criminal Code, a judge may order an accused to undergo assessment of his mental condition if there are reasonable grounds to believe the defendant was suffering, at the time of the alleged offence, from a mental disorder.

At the behest of both Crown and defence, Judge Ross Green ordered the evaluation.

Trowbridge’s next court appearance is scheduled for February 8 in person.
