The financial problems facing SIGN on Broadway have been improving, but they are still operating in the red.
In March the organization released that the facility had begun to lose substantial sums of money last September when a three-year contract to provide rooms for RCMP trainees was not renewed.
In a Yorkton This Week story in March SIGN Executive Director Richard Sevigny stated, "the immediate, short-term need is to stop the bleeding of money."
Last week Sevigny said the situation has improved.
"We're still losing some money, but not as much," he said. "We've probably cut the loss in half, if not more."
But they still need to utilize rooms on the second floor to get back to a break-even, or profit situation, said Sevigny.
There are 24 rooms on the second floor, and in March Sevigny said he was hoping a hotel in the city might manage the rooms as an 'overflow' for their hotel. However, he said after talking to all the local hotel owners, he has had no takers.
So in July SIGN will begin to offer the rooms themselves.
Sevigny said they hope to attract "non-profit, community groups" to use the rooms, or sports teams visiting the city.
While the rooms will be available on a night-by-night basis, Sevigny said ideally they'd like to rent out the rooms on a monthly basis, possibly for students, or single people just getting established in the city.
"We're trying to be as flexible as we can," he said.
As for the rest of the building, since March SIGN has been able to find some new tenants, including the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, and the Victory Church, both for its services and its pastor office.
And larger meeting rooms are also being utilized for Yorkton Tribal Council and Saskatchewan Tourism Association for training.
Sevigny said there is more potential for the meeting rooms with Sunrise Health "looking at the space" for possible training.
The meeting rooms are available for rent, although Sevigny said they are not getting into the wedding reception area. Weddings "are not a direction we want to go right now," he said.
"And there are other potential tenants," said Sevigny.
