Two Grade 10 students in the city have received scholarships worth up to $40,000 each.
Robin and Ryan Hamilton officially received their CIBC Youthvision Scholarship at the local branch of CIBC Friday.
Robin and Ryan were among 1the 33recipients of the 2014 CIBC Youthvision Scholarship who will receive up to $40,000.
Over the past 16 years, CIBC has committed $15million and almost 500 Canadian youth through the program.
To be eligible, Grade 10 students must be enrolled in a mentoring program with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada or the YMCA. Students receive ongoing mentoring from either Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada or the YMCA until they graduate from their post-secondary education.
Robin was almost at a loss for words regarding the announcement, finally saying she had received a call informing her of the scholarship.
"It's so exciting," she said.
Ryan too said the scholarship was of course big news for him.
Robin said the scholarship will open doors she was not sure would be available to her.
"I don't know if I'd be going to university if not for the CIBC scholarship," she said.
Ryan said the scholarship will allow him to attend business classes after graduating high school. Both he and his sister are looking at the area of accounting and business in terms of post-secondary education.
Each year, CIBC commits more than $1 million in the CIBC Youthvision Scholarship Program to give youth-in-need the financial means of pursuing a college or university education. This one-of-a-kind scholarship program partners with the YMCA as national administrator of the internship portion of the program, and Big Brothers Big Sister of Canada. It provides 33 grade 10 students with funding for tuition, dedicated mentorship and six years of paid summer internships.
