A pre-trial conference in the case of a 10-year-old girl who was allegedly abducted from the Yorkton Exhibition last year will be held at the Court of Queen's Bench in Yorkton on September 13. Melvin Dale Koroluk is accused of luring and abducting the girl who cannot be named. He also faced unrelated firearms charges resulting from a subsequent search of his residence. Yorkton This Week was not able obtain details about the September 13 hearing, but a trial date is likely to be set according to the registrar's office. Dave Rusnak, counsel for the accused declined to comment saying he had no instructions from his client to correspond with the media. Calls to crown prosecutor Darren Grindle were not returned by press time.
Jaycee Mildenberger of Usherville will stand trial for the murder of Gwenda Gregory starting March 11, 2013 in Yorkton Provincial Court. The 2009 homicide remained unsolved for more than three years before investigators including Major Crimes Unit South, Yorkton Forensic Identification Section, RCMP Yorkton General Investigation Section and the Coroners Office caught a break this spring. Mildenberger was arrested on June 8.
Last weekend Yorkton firefighters had a lot of downtime. Deputy Chief Greg Litvanyi said the department received no calls. Of course, when firefighters are not fighting fires, they concentrate on helping people prevent fires including the following tip on the safe use of fireworks. The City's bylaw prohibits the use of fireworks within city limits by anyone with the exception of a licenced fireworks company that has completed a Special Effects Event Approval and submitted that form to the fire chief or his designate at least five working days prior to the event. "The Fire Department also would like to remind citizens to always follow the safety instructions and use extreme caution if they are igniting any type of firework," Litvanyi said. If citizens have any questions they are welcome to visit the Fire Station during regular business hours or contact Litvanyi at 786.1797 (office) or 621. 7167 (cell).
