SFD responds to fire, accident

No one was reported to be seriously hurt

SASKATOON — The Saskatoon Fire Department responded to a fire and a motor vehicle accident on Thursday morning, with both incidents having no reported injuries or deaths.

A detached garage caught fire at a residence in the 800 block of Avenue I South. The fire was reported at 9:04 a.m. and three engines, a ladder and a rescue truck, and the battalion chief were dispatched to the scene.

The first units that arrived on scene saw flames coming out of the detached garage and tactical duties were assigned to fire crews. The fire was declared under control 10 minutes after the call.

Crews from utility companies were also on scene to assist while SaskEnergy also responded to secure the natural gas meter, which sustained some damage.

A fire investigator took over the scene to determine the cause and origin of the fire, and estimate the damage.

SFD was also called in to help with an extraction after one of the vehicles involved in a collision on Highway 14 rolled over.

SFD received the report at 9:36 a.m. and dispatched to scene were one engine, a rescue truck and the battalion chief.

Arriving fire crews saw the vehicle lying on its side in a field near the road where a person inside needed to be extricated.

Fire crews secured the vehicle, cut the battery cable and began the extrication process with the use of a hydraulic cutting tool.

Care of the patient, once removed from the vehicle, was transferred to ambulance service while the towing company and the Saskatoon Police Service helped clear up the accident scene.
