PREECEVILLE — The Preeceville U18 all-girl softball team was established a few years ago, with girls from across the area taking advantage of the opportunity to get out and play.
Coaches for the team are Shannon Nelson and Jason Purdy.
The team has 14 girls aged 14-18 years old, all with a variety of skills. Team members are: Camryn Nelson, Trenley Nelson, Asia Kilborn, Karley Buchinski, Alexis Firman, Addison Danielson, Devon Purdy, Kacey Heskin, Leah Thideman, Macy Mitchell, Paje Reynolds, Saphira Anaka, Sarah Masko and Trinity Petras.
“The girls have played hard so far with a few exhibition and league games and caught on very quickly,” said Nelson. “We are all very excited to have a girls' softball team here, but are hoping to encourage more girls to come out to play. Some of these girls have played baseball in the past, but softball has some different rules, and the biggest difference is the pitching. All the girls learned the steps and techniques of windmill pitching. We have a great group of young ladies who are super eager to learn and excel at this awesome game. We are in a league, but there are only a few teams, Porcupine Plain, Tisdale and ourselves. Exhibition games have been against Canora, Yorkton and Tisdale.”
The Preeceville all-girls team, named the Preeceville Pixies, is hoping to play an exhibition game during the Preeceville Lions Western Weekend. They hope to encourage more girls to come out to play as they have six players who will be graduating.
“If we don’t get more players, then there is a possibility of not having a team next year,” said Nelson.
