Yorkton This Week

Mrs. Shirley Falkenberg of Yorkton, widow of Herman Falkenberg, passed away on June 21, 2017 at the Yorkton & District Nursing Home. She was 79 years of age.

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Don - our beloved husband, father and grandfather. He left us suddenly at home in Yorkton, SK on September 9, 2017 at the age of 61.

Jack Wruth of Yorkton, aged 67, left this world peacefully with his family at his side on September 7, 2017. Jack (Robert John) Wruth was born in Gainsborough, SK on April 28, 1950 to Russell and Ethel Wruth.

Feb. 25, 1932 to June 19, 2017. It is with heavy hearts and much love that we say goodbye to Mildred (Millie) Alice Miller (nee Burman), Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Aunt.

“They’ll need a miracle to survive,” I thought that spring day as I struggled to plant my bedding plants. “Oh, I’ll need potting soil too,” I had told the nursery cashier on the day I’d made my final plant purchase – flowers mostly, and a few herbs.

It was over a year ago when I noticed Jay Boyd had referred to Justin Trudeau as Boy Blunder on one of his social media posts. I asked him if I could ‘steal’ that label and he encouraged it.

First of all, some garden housekeeping notes: you still have a few weeks to buy lovely fresh produce at the Yorkton Gardener’s market, which continues on Saturdays from 9 a.m. till noon until September 23.

The Sunflower Art and Craft Market is an institution in Yorkton, but while the name of the show stays the same the people in it change significantly every year. That’s true of 2017 as well, with 41 vendors who were new to the show.

The Yorkton Exhibition Association has embarked on a new project which is forging new ground for the long-time organization. JeanAnne Teliske, General Manager with the YEA, explained they are taking part in creating a new film on oats.

Exhibition associations have long been a part of communities across the Canadian Prairies. Most started around the idea of hosting annual fairs, a place for farmers and homemakers to bring their best to show against the best of their neighbours.
