REGINA – A man accused of hitting two pedestrians, causing what police call "significant injuries," made a first appearance in Regina Provincial Court this morning.
Matthew Nimchuk, 20, of Regina was charges with two counts dangerous driving causing bodily harm, appearing in custody Aug.
The charges stem from an incident last night around 9 p.m. when police were called to College Avenue and Cornwall Street for a report of two injured people. Early information indicated that the victims were hit by a vehicle and lying in the middle of the street.
"Police arrived on scene and found two females with significant injuries," said RPS in a media release.
The driver of the vehicle had stayed on the scene, and EMS took the injured women to hospital with serious, by not life-threatening injuries.
"The Regina Police Service Forensic Investigation Unit and Regina Police Service Traffic Safety Unit collision investigators were called to the scene," RPS said.
Through their investigation, police determined that Nimchuk was allegedly operating his vehicle in the rain without properly-functioning windshield wipers. He drove through a red light as a result, hitting the two women. Nimchuk was arrested and charged.
In court, the Crown consented to Nimchuk's release from custody, on conditions including no contact with the victims, and not to be in the driver's seat of a vehicle.
Nimchuk will next appear in court on Aug. 22.
