REGINA — Appearing on charges of vehicle theft, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, two counts of break and enter, and one count of probation breach, Vincent Edward Abraham entered guilty pleas in Regina Provincial Court today.
The Court heard that the incidents all occurred on the same day – Feb. 3 – when Abraham, 28, gained entry to a residence on the 300 block of 19th Avenue at 7:30 a.m. by kicking in a door. A person inside the home was able to provide a description to police, and a few minutes later, another attempted break in occurred 300 block of Broadway Avenue. This time, the suspect tried pushing in the door as the occupant answered, demanding keys. He was not able to access the home, but went on to steal a nearby truck.
Just after 8 a.m., police received a report of a stolen Chevrolet 2500, which was tracked by OnStar. Discovering the vehicle heading south on McCarthy Boulevard, RPS gave chase, and OnStar was able to disable the truck. The suspect fled on foot, leaving the vehicle in drive and slowly proceeding down the busy roadway. The suspect was eventually subdued and arrested by police.
Agreeing to a joint submission from Crown and defense lawyers, Judge Noah Evanchuk sentenced Abraham globally to 905 days in custody. Given credit for 141 days served, that sentence becomes 764 days going forward. While the Victim Fine Surcharge was waived, Abraham was placed on a lifetime firearms prohibition as part of ancillary orders. Judge Evanchuk also noted that federal corrections consider placing Abraham in a facility suitable for a healing lodge.
“My heart goes out to you for what you had to go through as a very young man,” Judge Evanchuk told Abraham after hearing from defense counsel, adding that his hope was that he could find a way to process the childhood trauma during incarceration. “You have more years in front of you than you have behind you.”
