Stony Rapids business charged with illegal sale of alcohol

Beer had been purchased at significantly inflated prices from an unauthorized seller.

STONY RAPIDS — A business in Stony Rapids has been charged with illegal sale of beverage alcohol. The charges come as a result of a joint search by North District Combined Traffic Services Saskatchewan and Black Lake RCMP, after officers conducting proactive patrols in the area stopped a vehicle and found alcohol inside.

Following the stop, from which it was determined the occupants had illegally purchased beer at significantly inflated prices from an unauthorized seller, CTSS and Black Lake RCMP executed a search warrant at a business in Stony Rapids and discovered approximately 640 cans of beer, 24 bottles of hard liquor, and 14 bottles and four boxes of wine. Investigators determined that the business was not licensed to sell alcohol that could be removed from the premises.

The business is scheduled to appear in court in Black Lake on May 2.

According to Cpl. Blair de Bruin from North District CTSS, the officers were conducting proactive patrols in the far north to ensure the safety of the roads. However, when evidence of other unsafe behaviour or illegal activities is found, it is thoroughly investigated. "Illegal alcohol sales are a safety concern. Licensing is in place to help ensure that alcohol is sold in a responsible way," says Cpl. de Bruin.

North District CTSS recently completed several proactive safety patrols on a number of Saskatchewan's northernmost roads, and Cpl. de Bruin expressed gratitude for the support of the communities they visited and the shared commitment to community safety.
