Everybody Has a Story

House concerts have been going on … well ... forever. Think travelling minstrels. But the modern day house concert, like the kind hosted by Kelly Waters of North Battleford, is a growing trend supported by today's social media and tech networking.

Throughout the year 2013, he delved into the history of North Battleford and extraordinary people who have impacted – or brought fame – to the community during its 100 years of existence.

Retired public health nurse Eva Scott is a master at knitting, quite literally. She achieved her Master of Knitting certificate from the Canadian Guild of Knitters in 1997.

Melissa Squire is not your average designer, nor is she your average bride.

He’s a cast member of one of Canada’s most prestigious theatre companies and, although his immediate family no longer resides here, he still comes “home” to the Battlefords.

"It's hard to live in a community when people are so divided," says Virginia Favel of Sweetgrass First Nation. One might think the division Favel talks about is the one between First Nation people and non-First Nation people. But it's not.

When the iconic Nitty Gritty Dirt Band played for 1,200 people at Paradise Hill's Summer Bash, a young musician from North Battleford was the opening act. It was a dream come true for Bruin Eberle.

Growing up, she fell asleep to the mad pounding of the Atlantic Ocean on the shores of the famous Irish County of Sligo. As an adult, she found her children's playground frequented by polar bears.

This week, the Summer School for the Solo Voice is underway in North Battleford. It's a unique summer school that provides not only education but performance opportunities for participants as well as recitals open to the public.

"She has hardly wavered. There've been times when it was very tough," says Rose Ray, mother of actress and dancer Natalie Krill. "She's very determined, she always was.
