Melfort begins road, sidewalk repairs Aug. 5

Melfort's latest infrastructure project includes road, curb, and sidewalk repairs, plus pedestrian upgrades near school zones.

MELFORT – On July 28, a construction notice was sent to residents, businesses and property owners by the City of Melfort, advising that sidewalk and road repairs will soon begin.

The notice stated that construction will take place in the following areas:

  • 100 block of McKendry Avenue East

  • 900 block of Alberta Street and Hatton Avenue East

  • Sidewalk and roadway construction

  • Pedestrian safety improvements

Nadine Gouws, municipal project manager, said in the city's notice: “The planned work zone includes approximately 135 metres of McKendry Avenue East and 100 metres of Alberta Street North, as shown in the attached site maps. We are providing this advance notice to ensure any coordination issues can be addressed well ahead of construction.”

She added, “The City’s contractor, B&B Construction Group Inc., is tentatively scheduled to begin work on Aug. 5, 2025. Construction is expected to take approximately two to three weeks to complete, weather permitting and barring unforeseen delays.”

Scope of work includes:

  1. Sidewalk and curb replacement
Crews will begin by removing existing curbs and sidewalks, then installing new concrete in designated locations.

  1. Roadway reconstruction
Damaged asphalt layers will be removed. The contractor will reconstruct the roadway base to proper elevation, install new base layers and repave with asphalt. Existing driveways and access points will be restored to the appropriate elevation and grade.

  1. Pedestrian safety upgrades
Improvements will take place on Hatton Avenue East and Assiniboia Street, as shown on the attached map. These upgrades are intended to improve walkability and safety, particularly in nearby school zones.

  1. Noise and work hours
Noise and vibrations are expected during the concrete and asphalt work. Crews will operate between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday to Sunday, in accordance with City Bylaw No. 2014-13.

Sidewalks may be closed, and access to on-street parking or driveways may be temporarily restricted. If construction occurs in front of or near your property, please arrange alternate parking and follow all posted signage. Traffic barricades will be in place for public safety. The contractor will make provisions to maintain pedestrian access to business entrances.

For your safety and that of the crews, stay clear of the construction zone and obey all signage. Children and pets should be supervised at all times near the work area.

Garbage and recycling pickup will continue without interruption. If your street is closed, Greenland Waste will collect from the back alley on your regular collection day according to the construction notice.

Gouws added, “Back alley pickup will only apply to residents whose street access is temporarily blocked due to construction. If you have questions or require special access arrangements during construction, please contact our office.”

According to the Cities Infrastructure Update, this project is part of Melfort’s broader infrastructure renewal initiative. In 2024, the City secured over $1.2 million in funding through the Canada Community-Building Fund to support road and sidewalk upgrades across key residential and commercial areas.
