MELFORT — City council is considering the installation of a new four-way stop at the intersection of Hatton Avenue East and Alberta Street.
In a report presented by Kalyna Cipywnyk, the city’s director of public works, it was recommended the intersection be converted into a four-way stop on a trial basis from August 2025 to June 2026.
“It is recommended that this intersection be upgraded to a four-way stop on a trial basis for one year,” the report stated. “The intent of this trial period is to provide the city with a better understanding of commuter behaviour around a four-way stop and the impact on the pedestrian experience. At the conclusion of the trial period, the city could assess whether a permanent four-way stop should be installed.”
Temporary signage would be installed for the duration of the trial, and community feedback will be gathered throughout the period to assess effectiveness and safety impacts.
The report noted the proposal was in response to safety concerns raised by administrators from Reynolds School and Melfort Unit Comprehensive Collegiate (MUCC), as well as staff from the Northeast School Division.
“As shared in the previous report, the feedback from Reynolds School, MUCC and the Northeast School Division highlighted the high levels of pedestrian activity and vehicle congestion during school hours, particularly in conjunction with school bus operations,” Cipywnyk said.
The intersection is located near school zones, making it a high-traffic area for both pedestrians and vehicles during peak hours. Concerns have been raised about student safety, driver visibility and the lack of existing traffic controls to slow down vehicles.
