SIRT investigating in-custody death in Melfort

On May 6 at around 9:45 a.m., Melfort RCMP responded to a report of a 44-year-old man disturbing the peace at a residence on Bemister Avenue West in Melfort.

MELFORT - The Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) is investigating an RCMP in-custody death that occurred on May 6, 2025.

On May 6 at around 9:45 a.m., Melfort RCMP responded to a report of a 44-year-old man disturbing the peace at a residence on Bemister Avenue West in Melfort. When police arrived at the residence, they located the man, who had broken the front window of the residence. The man was taken into police custody and transported to the Melfort Detachment. EMS was contacted, attended the detachment and transported the man to hospital for assessment. 

A short while later, the RCMP received a report of a disturbance at the hospital involving the same man. The man was taken into police custody and transported back to Melfort Detachment cells around 10:45 a.m. 

The 44-year-old man was located unresponsive around 5:10 p.m. by RCMP officers and CPR was started immediately and EMS contacted.

The man was transported to hospital where he was declared deceased.

The Police Act, 1990, mandates the Saskatchewan RCMP to notify SIRT, who will investigate the circumstances of this in-custody death. SIRT will provide further details as the investigation unfolds; inquiries regarding this in-custody death can be directed to them.
