Despite a sterling regular season, the Muenster Red Sox fell short over the weekend at the Saskatchewan Premier Baseball League (SPBL) AA championships in Melville.

GERWING: Fred P. Gerwing July 5, 1931 - July 18, 2013 The family of Fred P. Gerwing sadly announce his passing on July 18 after a lengthy and hard-fought illness. Fred was born in 1931, in Baker, Nebraska, to John and Amalia Gerwing.

SENKO: Jean Phyllis September 30, 1938 - July 11, 2013 The death of Mrs. Jean (nee Kostuk) Senko of Lanigan, SK, occurred in the Lanigan District on Thursday, July 11, 2013. She was 74 years of age.

There have now been 37 confirmed deaths in the Lac-Mégantic train disaster. As bodies continue to be pulled out of the devastated downtown area, the scale of the disaster only grows.

A stellar summer of baseball continues to roll on for local teams. Over the weekend both the Marysburg Royals and Muenster Red Sox continued their winning ways, with both teams among the elite in their respective leagues.

Chelsea Leonew started playing softball when she was only five and hasn't looked back since. Encouraged to play by her father Darcy, Leonew, along with fellow Humboldt natives Carissa Wempe and Rebecca Athmer, will be traveling to Leduc, Alta.

Last-minute cleanups are in order because the Communities in Bloom (CIB) national judges are arriving in Humboldt to begin their judging Friday.

It was a celebration worthy of 100 years of history. On July 14 Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada celebrated its 100th anniversary and the local chapter celebrated with cake, games and an all-around good time at Water Ridge Park.

Just a few kilometres southwest of Humboldt, almost lost among bright yellow fields of canola, there is a small clearing. At first glance it's notable only for its drabness amidst the surrounding explosion of colour.
