When the Sochi Olympics officially open in two days, Canada will be sending 221 athletes, its largest team ever, and two of them can trace their roots back to Humboldt.

So last week, the big focus of our paper was on the downtown and people's expectations of it. Everyone's opinion matters, including ours here at the paper, but some of the ideas, well, just aren't that practical.

It was a sold out event on the night of Feb. 1, an evening filled with a snappy jokes, emotional tears, awards presentations, great music, delicious food and lots of drinking and dancing.

It was a bit of an up-and-down week for the Humboldt Broncos as they picked up two wins sandwiched around a blowout loss. The week began on Jan. 28 with a 3-2 win in Nipawin against the Hawks.

Raising cattle just got a little less risky. Unlike their crop-growing counterparts, cattle and hog producers have long had to make do without the benefit of a comprehensive insurance program in case of price declines.

It's been close to five years since the provincial government decided to reduce surgical wait times, but the end is nigh, as is success. The province is continuing to boost surgical capacity to meet the demand all across the province.

Maybe there's something in the water. Whatever the reason, Humboldt has become the epicenter of athletic excellence in Saskatchewan.

Sometimes, old buildings just have to come down. "These decisions are never just spontaneously made at one meeting," said Mayor Malcolm Eaton. "It's a lengthy process and takes years to figure out.
