"Art programs are important to have in a high school, as they allow students to express themselves and promotes creative thinking," said Rosie Dyck, John Paul II's art teacher.

"There's art in every aspect of our lives, from the clothes we wear to the furniture in our houses. It's important for students to understand why things are designed the way they are."

Students have the option to take Dyck's art class as an elective, and it's for Grades 8 to 12. An art club is offered after school on Thursdays, which involves students using different media to create pieces of art.

Currently, in Grade 8 classes, students are working on creating ceramic clocks. Grade 9 students are creating Keith Herring inspired designs on sheets of copper. Grade 10 students are learning to paint with acrylic paints, and Grade 11 and 12 students are beginning a unit on Van Gogh.

"If I could have my students learn only one thing in my class, it would be to love and appreciate all forms of art" said Dyck.

Learning to express yourself creatively is a helpful and important aspect of life.
