Graduation days are approaching quickly. Our granddaughter graduates May 4 at Hafford Central SchoOl and "the dress" comes up in the conversation and so do the memories.

I'll tell you a secret. I wore my Aunt Ethel's nightie to my high school graduation.

Graduation in the early 1950s was pretty low key compared to what it is now, but we were quite excited about the "big" do. Mom made my dress of blue lace, net and taffeta. We made our own pattern because I designed my own dress.

We were putting on the finishing touches and having the final fitting a few days before, when Mom noticed we needed another underskirt. There wasn't much time to get material.

We were telling Aunt Ethel our problem and she solved it. "I have a blue nightie just that colour that I never wear. You may use it for your underskirt."

With a bit of remodeling it worked. I was very proud of my dress, but didn't breathe a word about wearing my aunt's nightie that day.

Now you know my secret.
