UPS Grade 6 parents turned up in costume to help the class give guided tours through their haunted house Oct. 31.

Halloween was quiet in our community. The weather was favourable so most kids took to the streets after school in this annual tradition. By early evening, most of the trick-or-treaters had either headed to hockey practice or other activities, or home to get a good night's rest.

The high school chose to do their dress-up day Oct. 28 due to a variety of other student activities Oct. 31. UPS Grade 6 students hosted a four-station games centre in the gym prior to students touring their terrific haunted house. Students were treated to treats and a drink following their activities. It was a great place to parade your costume for the evening's events. St. Peter's School had students dress in black and orange and parents hosted a penny carnival in the afternoon as part of their Halloween fun. Many businesses also joined in the fun with staff dressing up for the day.

Warriors volleyball is almost at season's end. Junior boys' and junior girls' teams advanced from the first round of conference playoffs Oct. 26. They were playing for the district championships Nov. 3. Senior girls play their first round of conference playoffs this weekend in Rosetown while the senior boys head to La Loche.

The Rec Skate program started yesterday. This is a program for any child who has skating experience and consists of fun skating drills and shinny. Forms can be picked up at the town office. Also, there is a call out for any ladies wanting to start a ladies' rec hockey team in Unity. Practices would be Wednesdays, 8:50 - 10:05 p.m., and start Nov. 9. Contact our town rec. director, Nicole Goldsworthy for details.

The Unity Curling Club moved their annual cash spiel earlier into their season to see if it's a better format for curlers looking to kick their competitive season into high gear. Spectators can look forward to watching: Bruce Korte (provincial champ on numerous occasions), Scott Manners from Lloydminster and Shawn Joyce and other competitive teams from Saskatoon and area.

Also registered are some of our local competitive curlers: the Glen Heitt and Rob Bakken rinks, who both played in men's Northerns hosted here last season, as well as the Lloyd Fell rink from Wilkie, who have been in the provincial men's tankard before. Action starts Nov. 11 and runs through to Nov. 13. There is lots of room for spectators, who can get a close-up of both ends of the ice with those great angled televisions to watch. Hurry hard down to the rink to watch live curling action this weekend!

Are you taking part in Movember? During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches on thousands of men's faces, in Canada and around the world. With their "mo's", these men raise vital funds and awareness for men's health, specifically prostate cancer. You can register online for this project or check at your local health care facility for more information.

Voters in Unity cast their ballots and have elected local Co-op lumber manager, Peter Keller, and local veterinarian, Travis Ducherer, as their next two councillors. The voter numbers were good for this civic by-election and the numbers were extremely fractional between successful candidates and the others.

Now we are on the last steps of the provincial election. After the candidates' forum was held in Unity, voters have a good grasp on what these electoral hopefuls can do for our part of the province.

This weekend is the dinner theatre production of "Acting Funny". Our Little Theatre group has a great reputation for entertainment and lots of laughs.

Nov. 13 is edging ever closer and that is a date I had pointed out you mark on your calendars as, whether you liked or disliked former premier Lorne Calvert when he was in office, you are almost sure to enjoy him as guest preacher at the Unity United Church for service that day. His reflections are most relatable, as well as humour-filled, and he might even treat us with his talent for music. He has been a big hit with both young and old attending these services. If something different is what you are looking for, this service will certainly offer that and more!

Don't forget, Nov.9 is the deadline to vote for the Unity Community Resource Centre in round two in the Aviva Community Fund contest. Our vision is to empower community members to meet their physical, emotional, mental and spiritual needs. Our mission is to create a safe and inviting environment that allows community members to feel comfortable addressing their needs. Our goals are to promote the value of individuals, to promote positive parenting and family life, to strengthen parenting skills, to build stronger families, and to match the needs of the community with available skills and resources.

We are currently in the process of partnering with Wilkie Independent Living Services (WILS) to further renovate our building so we can expand for additional programs. The Aviva Community Fund prize money would allow us to have future security and aid with providing equipment for a Community Kitchen. You can log onto http://www.avivacommunityfund.org/ideas/acf12173 or sign into your Facebook page and type in Aviva. Our success depends on your help!

Also Unity is part of the in-motion challenge, vying for dollars towards youth in the community. Log on to www.jumpin.ca, or learn more about the project and pledge at www.saskatchewaninmotion.ca and make your in-motion pledge for Unity today.

Coffee row folk have been discussing local election results and upcoming provincial election thoughts. They have moved on to hockey and curling season being that the Rider season is long over. And this time of year, the topic of weather can never be left off the table of discussion. And so again you can see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row. Until next week ...
