Martha Shultz and Glenna Klassen provide musical entertainment at the Sonningdale Mother's Day celebration.

Sonningdale celebrated Mother's Day May 5 with an event to honour all past "special" mothers.

There were many ladies in attendance and it was especially enjoyable for everyone as we were able to reacquaint with so many who have relocated, but returned for the celebration.

MC for the afternoon was Echo Noyse, who had accepted the honour of being "mother of the year" some years earlier.

The afternoon activities began with Echo introducing the 1974 Mother of the Year, Doreen Taylor. She enlightened us with an interesting report on the history of events since it all began in 1973. Doreen was prettily attired in a light floral dress and beautiful large hat, fit for the occasion.

The United Church ladies were responsible for getting the Mother of the Year organization off the ground, although ladies of other churches were welcomed. The first mother honoured was Laura Ferguson in 1973.

Echo introduced Dorothy Elliott who was honoured in 1989. Both Doreen and Dorothy now reside in North Battleford, but were active in the earlier years of the organization.

The rendering of the song, Precious Memories, was beautifully done by Martha Shultz and Glenna Klassen.

Doreen Taylor's daughter, Madeline Souster, gave a true to life recitation, self explanatory in the title "Isn't That the Truth!"

Thanks were expressed to all for making the "last Mother's Day" a memorable one. Thanked were all who took part and the ladies who supplied the delicious cakes, whipped cream and saskatoon berry sauce. A special thanks to the young ladies - Corina Winder, Hailey Anderson and Lacy Noyse - who stepped in to help with serving.
