Long weekend coming up - has this weather inspired you to plant your garden or deterred you from setting out on your first camping trip?

UCHS hosted their big 50th anniversary celebrations yesterday! UCHS staff, students and alumni hosted guests for a variety of activities, including viewing the school and reviewing memorabilia. The school and the PSCC (Positive School Climate Committee) have been making plans for many months now and hoped to host a variety of generations at this event.

Don't forget ball season is in full swing and the action is FREE to spectators. Whether you are a softball fan watching various age groups, including bantams, midgets and ladies' teams playing with the Battlefords Ladies' League Mondays and Wednesdays or if you enjoy the mites, squirts or peewee divisions, there is something going most every night of the week. Or, if you are a baseball fan, there are various divisions to watch including the midgets and senior Cardinals. Or you can watch a game of slo-pitch Friday nights. Next weekend is the annual Miners' slo-pitch tournament.

Congratulations to local UCHS student Justin Wood who has earned two scholarships from Saskatchewan Golf. Justin is an active participant at the local club as well as playing in the junior circuit competitions each year.

Congratulations also to former Unity resident, Chad Leier, who was named Rising Star for Oilweek magazine as one of the youngest executives successful in the oil field of work today.

Congratulations to the Town of Unity who won the Environmental Stewardship Award at last weekend's Saskatchewan Municipal Awards - celebrating excellence in 2012. Various category winners were chosen by a selection committee which included Senator Pamela Wallin, reporter Murray Mandryk, Jim Angus, Holly Heatherington and Bob Linner.

The Unity School of Dance annual dance recital entitled, A year in the life, was a crowd pleaser. Capacity crowds were in the gym both nights and in awe of the talent in this club as they showed their successful numbers in tap, ballet, jazz and lyrical numbers. The two performances were jammed full of family, friends and fans of the dance students.

Swimming lesson registration will start May 22 and run through May 24 at the town council chambers from 1-5 p.m. daily. No registrations will be taken by phone prior to this registration. For more information you can contact Stephanie Schell at 228-2621.

Unity Western Days is coming up the first weekend in June. The committee is always looking for volunteers for a variety of events. As well, they are currently accepting nominations for Citizen of the Year. Nomination forms can be picked up at the Press Herald office. And keep in mind the committee is looking for parade entries for their 1 p.m. parade Saturday, June 2. In addition the committee is trying an outdoor market June 2 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the town office parking lot. Contact the town office for details at 228-2621.

Unity Credit Union has stepped up to the plate again offering to match the personal community donations made from May 1 to June 30 (to a maximum of $20,000) to be used for the installation of computer radiography equipment at the Unity Health Centre.

Coffee row, what can I say - hockey talk is still on the table until those lingering hockey playoffs come to a close in what? A month or so?! They have also been throwing out predictions for the upcoming Rider season with the addition of some new faces on the roster. And seeding will be on the topic table until its completion hopefully sooner than later ... So you see we keep busy in Unity with activities and wisdom from our friends on coffee row.
