The year 2014 opened as cold as 2013 left, so we are used to it by now, but that doesn't mean we really like it that way.

Sympathy is extended to the family of Albert Joseph "Maurice" Lane of Neilburg. He passed away in Unity Jan. 6 at the age of 95 years.

Imagine this: You're standing backstage listening to the buzz of the audience. The house lights dim. The audience quiets. You hear the beginning chords of the first song. The stage lights come on and you step on stage to a roaring crowd.

2014 may have just begun but the registration deadline for this year's Battlefords Kiwanis Music Festival is quickly approaching. The deadline for entries is Saturday, Feb. 1.

Twenty enthusiastic members of Rivers' Edge Quilters held their first meeting of 2014 Jan. 3 at the Don Ross Craft Room. A report was received indicating that 15 Walker bags had been donated to the residents of Villa Pascal.

2013 was a life-changing year for Tammy Donahue Buziak. The chair of the City of North Battleford's centennial committee and part time archivist is moving into 2014 with new priorities, one less job - and a new haircut.

Today, I'm devoting this entire First Person story to frogs. Exciting stuff. Those of you familiar with the Battlefords know stuffed animals have a prominent role in the life of our community.

The time capsule, to be buried in the spring, will hopefully surprise the citizens of North Battleford in 100 years, who will open it to discover something of our life today.

Coming off a sometimes overly busy holiday season, January and even February can be considered a slower time when it comes to community activities.

To help celebrate the 65th anniversary of the Western Development Museum, people are encouraged to visit their local WDM this year.
