The black metal bench depicts a schoolhouse, as the rural site of Halfway Campground was originally the yard of the Halfway School that closed in the 1950s.

This group of volunteers has maintained the Highway 16 area west of Maidstone for the past 17 years. Many repeat travellers leave thank you notes in appreciation of the clean tidy rest stop and campground.

Fees collected and donations received are used to enhance the facilities, for landscape materials at the front of Pine Island Lodge, to purchase hanging floral baskets in the town and to support the 4-H playground in securing new equipment. Over the years several of the volunteers were students of Halfway School.
