Bridging an independent living gap

The hopes and dreams of a small group of people in Edam to bridge the gap between independent living and long-term care are finally coming to life.

The hopes and dreams of a small group of people in Edam to bridge the gap between independent living and long-term care are finally coming to life.

After almost eight years of planning, Edam Enriched Manor is well underway on the south outskirts of Edam, adjacent to Lady Minto Health Care Centre and one block from Edam Community Recreation Centre. The exterior shell is up, the roofing is on, the windows are in and work is well underway inside. Target for completion is fall 2014.

The air-conditioned ground-level 26-unit 55+ housing facility features 14 double units and 12 singles. Doubles provide sufficient room for a queen-sized bed. All suites open onto a central hallway and are handicap accessible including bathrooms complete with wide entry shower with seat. Each suite also provides mini-fridge, sink, cabinets and closets, private outdoor exit onto a concrete patio and parking stall. Low-level placement of windows affords outdoor viewing from the confines of a chair.

The complex will include an industrial kitchen and dining hall serving occupants three meals per day. The facility will include a common laundry room accessible to all occupants for tenant laundry.

The central core also includes a large foyer, sitting area and hair salon. There will be 24-hour staff presence at all times. Staff recruitment is underway to provide a recreation program. Residents will also have access to raised garden plots on the grounds. Liaisons with home care and other service providers have been initiated.

The building will be leased and operated by Edam Enriched Manor Inc., a non-profit corporation governed by directors appointed by the Village of Edam. Donations and sponsorships both corporate and private are being encouraged to defray the estimated $175,000 cost of common-area furnishings and back-up power generator. Donor recognition similar to the community centre project is planned. Bequests are most welcome.

To date approximately half of the units are spoken for. Full occupancy is anticipated before completion. Units are reserved with a $1,000 deposit and leased via monthly payments under a tenant agreement. Further details are available at www.edamenrichedmanor.ca or by calling 306-441-3753.
