With the years creeping ever onward, it becomes increasingly important to recognize what few reminders there are of those who risked it all. To that end, Brad Trost has enlisted the aid of local Al Hingley to assist in locating all veterans of the Second World War.
As a commemoration of Canada’s engagement in WWII, Veterans Affairs Canada is offering a limited edition tribute that includes a certificate and a special lapel pin. According to Hingley, the pin is based on a nickel design from 1945. Now all that’s left to do is find all the veterans to present them to.
“I’ve talked to close to 18 and some of them have already prepared the papers,” said Hingley. “They’re encouraged to apply to Veterans Affairs Canada for an application form or they can obtain one from me.”
During the application process, the only thing the veterans need to do is provide the name they want on the certificate and their service numbers, which Hingley says they’re more likely to remember than they’re own names.
“We’re looking forward to a presentation ceremony about mid-January, which is when Brad (Trost) will be present at the Legion Hall.”
For that presentation ceremony, anyone and everyone is invited to attend. Until then, however, all living veterans are encouraged to contact either Veterans Affairs Canada or Hingley.
