CARROT RIVER — A Carrot River Fire and Rescue firefighter is recovering after an injury at a fire.
At 3:30 pm on Nov. 11, 14 firefighters were called out to a structure fire in the RM of Moose Range.
“While they were actively engaged in the firefighting a piece of the structure broke off of the main structure and came towards a firefighter and struck him in the head and shoulder,” said Kevin Trew, Carrot River’s town administrator.
The firefighter was removed from firefighting until the ambulance arrived.
“All firefighters then were, rather than actively trying to fight the fire, were in a control situation where they were keeping the fire from spreading until such time as the firefighter was removed from the scene,” Trew said. “Then when he was removed from the scene, they resumed firefighting.”
The firefighter was taken by ambulance to Nipawin Hospital where he received care and testing.
“Iit was decided as a precautionary measure to send him on to Prince Albert for some more testing. The testing that was done in both Nipawin and Prince Albert came up negative, so everything was good.”
He was released from the hospital that evening with no long-term injuries.
“We should be very thankful that this all turned out well and we should be thankful for the firefighter services and all emergency services that put those risks, every day,” Trew said.
