The city of North Battleford has issued a statement saying they are ready for the expected rise of water levels in the North Saskatchewan River.
The Water Security Agency (WSA) estimates that water levels will rise by an average of two meters and is expected to peak in the Battlefords on Sunday, August 28. It is due to heavy rainfall this week in Alberta.
The city is monitoring the situation but does not expecting any issues.
“We have been monitoring this since Wednesday and anticipate no issues," said city manager Jim Puffalt in a statement, "but of course we will be watching the water level and the water flow forecasts by the WSA closely over the weekend. We do have sandbags ready, just in case something unforeseen should happen.”
It is not expected that there will be any impact on the day-to-day operations at the Water Treatment Plants or on the work to build four new groundwater wells for WTP #1.
Albert Headrick, Director of Protective Services/Fire Chief, also urged caution along river banks and the water, as higher water levels usually result in stronger currents and the potential for floating debris.
