It was a tearful surprise for the Humboldt Collegiate as they said goodbye to teacher Roland Daum during the academic awards assembly on June 12.

Sitting among the students, their love for Daum was obvious in the cheers that went up as he took the stage.

His love for his students was evident in the emotion in his voice as he started to speak.

“It’s been a good 19 years here,” he said, “and I really love you all.”

While he is not leaving because of the school or the students, it is time to move on. There is only so much pepperoni you can take, he said.

“It’s been a slice.”

While he is proud of all of his students for the awards and learning going on in the school, it is not always about what a student knows but it is more about where someone has been.

“I want students to remember that when they meet new people, think about that.”

Principal Cory Popoff said that Daum was engaging and entertaining to the students, and was clear in the fact that his classes were always full.

“He would probably one of the most storied teachers here at HCI and when I say storied, I mean in good ways not in any bad way.”

He has a talent of bringing out the best in students, said Popoff, and he will be missed at HCI by both staff and students.

“Any student that gave their time to (Daum) benefited.”
