The provincial minister of corrections and policing will be coming to North Battleford in October.

The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce said Tuesday at their monthly meeting that Christine Tell will be the guest speaker at a luncheon event Oct. 6.

The event is to be hosted by the Chamber but will take place at Caleb Village, the seniors complex located near the old Kinsmen Aquatic Centre site on 106th Street. Caleb Village is a member of the Chamber.

Mayor Ian Hamilton also confirmed Tell would be coming to speak at the October luncheon during the Monday municipal services meeting at City Hall.

The arrival of Tell is of great interest to civic officials, who have been spearheading a six-month pilot project where two new municipal Community Safety Officers have been hired, with the goal of taking over some functions from the RCMP, freeing up RCMP resources to concentrate on more serious crimes.

It is expected that will be a main topic of interest of city officials in attendance. Also of interest is whether the province will provide some funding to help North Battleford keep the Crime Reduction Co-ordinator position beyond the current six-month contract.
