A former registered sex offender who set off an uproar by locating in North Battleford two years ago made a provincial court appearance by video Wednesday.

Norbert Dumais, 56, faces charges of drug possession, sexual assault, uttering threats and breach of undertaking. He was living in Leoville and arrested following an investigation by Spiritwood RCMP in May.

Dumais had previously served time for several sex crimes, including ones against adolescents and children. He had been released from the Bowden Institution in Alberta in May 2009. Upon his release, he settled in North Battleford near a neighbourhood school, causing an uproar in the community over his presence. He moved out of the city a few months later.

Dumais appeared by video link from custody in Saskatoon before Judge Violet Meekma on Wednesday in North Battleford provincial court. Dumais remains in custody and is set to return to court June 29 for another appearance by video in provincial court.
