Highway 16 and Highway 4 were in treacherous shape last night as freezing rain and snow made driving conditions unsafe for travel.

At about 10 p.m. Battlefords and Maidstone RCMP were advising travelers to stay off the road as there were several collisions and jackknifed semis.

The Department of Highways was contacted and worked to sand and clear Highways 4 and 16, but at the time travel was not recommended in the Battlefords and Maidstone areas.

As of 8 a.m. Wednesday the area was “yellow” on the Highway Hotline map, indicated winter conditions were prevailing.

Roads were also in bad shape in the Tisdale and Melfort region overnight. There was Midget AAA action between the Trojans and Blackhawks played in Tisdale last night, with News-Optimist sports reporter Dustin Saracini and CJNB’s play-by-play announcer Craig Beauchemin travelling to the game in a separate vehicle.

Shortly after midnight, Saracini emailed to report they were “iced in” and spending the night in Beauchemin’s car. They finally made it back to the Battlefords about 8 a.m.
