The Saskatchewan Council for International Co-operation is joining the City of North Battleford and other communities across Saskatchewan in officially proclaiming International Development Week, Feb. 3 to 9.

IDW highlights how people in Saskatchewan are making a difference in communities around the world, and encourages groups to showcase their work at home and overseas."

"North Battleford is a community known for its generosity," said Ian Hamilton, mayor of North Battleford. "Whether that means supporting fundraisers at the local school, or supporting education programs in schools in Africa, people here really believe in taking

care of each other."

"It's important to remember that we can all make a difference in the world," said Jenn Bergen, the executive director of SCIC, "from learning about global issues and discussing what you learn with your family and friends, to supporting international development organizations that are working hard to improve lives around the world, there are lots of ways for people to get engaged."

"We really encourage our citizens to be aware the positive role they can play, both in our community and around the world," said Hamilton. "International Development Week is a perfect opportunity to do just that, and we're happy to be part of it."

Information about IDW is currently on display at the North Battleford Public Library, along with a resource list for anyone who might want to learn more about global issues.

SCIC is also hosting an online IDW poetry contest, which is open and available to everyone. Interested individuals or groups can find lots of ideas on getting engaged as active global citizens at www.earthbeat.sk.ca.
