It was not the warmest of evenings, but the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 28 in Humboldt were offering a warm building and a delicious meal at their annual fish fry.
The Feb. 3 fish fry, is a major fundraiser for the legion, with organizer Sherry Hogemann saying the money raised will help add some new furniture to their club room.
This year’s fish fry saw 135 tickets sold, down only slightly from last year, says Hogemann, who notes the event has grown significantly from its start.
Awareness, says Hogemann, is the biggest reason for that, noting that she feels more people are aware it is happening.
“They’re starting to prepare a little earlier to get their tickets and stuff.”
Hungry eaters were treated to jack fish caught on Clark Lake.
In addition to dinner, the evening also featured a 50/50, as well as raffle items donated by Great Western Brewing.
Hogemann was really pleased to see the support shown by Great Western Brewing, noting they are quite good to them.
“They are very supportive whenever we have events.”
Overall it was a great evening, says Hogemann, who notes they were able to operate ahead of schedule.
“We fed people a little earlier. It worked out great the way we did it today. And our fish fryers just did an absolutely super job.”
Of course, the fryers were only a small part of the volunteer base, who helped out over the course of the evening, says Hogemann.
“We’re very thankful for everyone who came out today, who helped… it’s just wonderful to have so much support from other legion members… They’re awesome. We have very awesome help here.”
